Pick 3: Green Bay vs. Detroit and Carolina vs. Pittsburgh

Pick 3: Green Bay vs. Detroit and Carolina vs. Pittsburgh

The Teaser: Pair Green Bay and Carolina

Game 1: Green Bay vs. Detroit

The Initial Line:

Green Bay even away vs. Detroit

The Take:

Add 8 points to Green Bay’s line

The Final Line:

Green Bay +8

The Breakdown:

Green Bay struggled to find its rhythm early, but recovered to beat New York 31-24 at home. Aaron Rodgers had 346 yds and 3TDs as his main target was Jordy Nelson who erupted for 209yds and a TD catch. Their offense is tough to stop once they get momentum going. Detroit was handed their first loss by Carolina 24-7, largely due to 3 turnovers. Calvin Johnson was held in check compared to his usual performances, with 83yds and no TDs. Rookie kicker Nate Freese also hurt their cause as he missed 2 FG attempts from 49 yds.

Green Bay is trying to establish some momentum, so this is a huge game for them against their division rival. They have won 5 of the last 6 games vs Detroit since 2011, with 2 out of 3 coming in the motor city. Rodgers and Stafford are 2 QBs who can put up big yards, and expect this game to go back and forth. Neither of these teams are going to give up, and this should end as a one possession game. I still give the slight edge to Green Bay, so grab them at +8 just in case Detriot is able to muster a late bomb to Calvin Johnson.

Game 2: Carolina vs. Pittsburgh

The Initial Line:

Carolina -3.5 home vs. Pittsburgh

The Take:

Add 8 points to Carolina’s line

The Final Line:

Carolina +4.5

The Breakdown:

Carolina was able to manufacture a win in week 1 without Cam Newton, and looked very dominate with him back in the lineup in week 2. They beat up on Detroit with a 24-7 victory at home, causing 3 turnovers while Newton passed for 281 yds and a TD. The defense didn’t seem to miss a beat without DE Greg Hardy, as they recorded 4 sacks and CB Antoine Cason was able to force 2 fumbles. Pittsburgh was in trouble all night in Baltimore, losing 26-6 to their division rival. They shot themselves in the foot with 3 turnovers, and Baltimore ran an efficient offense to run Pittsburgh’s record to 1-1.

A lot of people doubted Carolina going into the season, but they are showing that they can perform on both sides of the ball. Pittsburgh has been very shaky to start the season, blowing a 24 pt lead to Cleveland and getting embarrassed by Baltimore. Carolina would like to capitalize on their NFC South division as 2 of the teams are 0-2 (NO and TB) and Atlanta stands at 1-1. Carolina is 8-1 at home since the start of last year, with their only loss coming opening week of 2013 against Seattle (the Super Bowl champs). Expect Carolina to win this one, but just to get some insurance take them at +4.5 in case a last minute FG somehow drowns them.
